Hardtops for Z3 convertible BMW can be pleasureable and yet pose a headache if you don't know what to look for. I am going to go into that a bit into that later on in this review.

When we see people in cars with convertable hardtops especially cars such as the BMW Z3 we find them great to look at. More importantly they do also perfom very well on the road. The hardtop coupe do help to keep the driver warm and insulated from the cold as well as keep the noise down when driving. Besides the Z3 hard top helps to give the car more rigidity which is one of the most important reasons why BMW drivers look for convertible hardtop vechicles.

New Z3 parts for hardtops for the coupe do cost considerably more money than used parts and you will find great bargains on auction sites such as Ebay.com. For example a new hardtop for a Z4 hardtop could be as high as $2575 with additional costs for mounting hardware for the Z4 another $180. By the way the Z3 mounting hardware used to be $450. Then there is the labour to install it which could set you back between $250 to $500 depending upon the model of the BMW car and the labour rate near you. This all works out to be very expensive.

With a base car price of around $28,750 , a Z3 is a very classic roadster which sports a long hood or bonnet, short boot or tail, with fold down fabric top seating two people.

In 1959 the Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold for around $29,000 which was consider affordable to some.

When buying a hardtop look to see how well it fits as well as how easily can it be fitted. Now Original tops will surely fit much better than aftermarket tops which are found quite often not to fit as well as the original parts.

Make sure you don't tighten the angle brackets too tight as you could crack the fiberglass hardtops.

The Z3 was an exceptional car that came with extra fitting for its hardtop and a heating switch for the rear view window. It had aits one handbook so make sure when buying a second hand car all this comes with it or you will be paying much more for your Z 3 hardtop.

Storing the hardtops could be a problem as you will quite often take the top off in good weather to drive in the open. Make sure you have a storage space allocated for them as well as a stand on which the hardtop could be mounted when not in use. Hardtops do take up a bit of room and if not stored properly could be easily damaged.

What are the different types of hardtops for BMW Z3?

There are different material which could be used for hardtops such as steel whcih is considered the ultimate for rigidity, insulation and comfort. Stell hardtops prevented the scuttle shakes and reduced wind resistance and quite often increased interior space in the car.

Aluminum hardtops were much lighter but quite often with the extra paint work a person would find it quite hard to remove it by himself. The paint work could get damaged.

New material used in hardtops are fiberglass, carbon fibre or Kevlar.

Retractable Hardtops or RHT

Detaching hardtops and storing them can surely be a pain until the retracable hardtop come in to fashion. Retracble hardtops conceived in the USA as early as 1922. The technology has improved with many manufacturers now adding them to their top line cars.

BMW Z 3 Accessories

BMW Z3 was very first of BMW models that was actually assembled in the United States. Before that no new model was assmbled outside of Germany. The Z3 BMW became BMW's first mass-market modern roadster from BMW.

Did you know the model of the first BMW that came out of a US BMW plant. It was the E36/4, 318i that was produced from the assembly line in Plant Spartanburg in early October 1994.

BMW introduced in 1996 the model BMW Z3 Roadster, as a 1996 year model, just a bit after it was the feauture car in Golden Eye, the James Bond movie.

The car had a few variants before it was discontinued in 2002. In 1999 BMW introduced a Z3 Coupe which was manufactured and assembled in South Carolina at Spartanburg.

BMW Z3 Coupe, BMW Z 3 Used

In 2002 at the Paris Auto Show the Z3 was finally replacd by the BMW Z4.

The Z3 had its royal designs from the E36 platform in the 3 Series and was designed by the design team in BMW headed by Joji Nagashima.

This resulting platform soon got to be referred to as the E36/7(roadster or the E36/8(coupe). In the early days only a 1.9L M44B19 straight-4 engine type was on offer but buyers were not happy with its 138hp (103kw). Even the interior modelling was not in keeping with the other BMW models. The rear view window of the Z3 looked poor and was no comparison to the rich look seen in the far less expensive model of the 1999 Mazda MXS.

In the United States market in 1997 the BMW`Z3 inline-4 engine was soon upgraded to a larger straight-6engine, the 2.8 L M52B28. This engine was very similiar to the engine of the 328i, the BMW M52 except that its head and block was in total aluminum. This model was highly desirable with its increased 189 hp or 141kw engine.

In other countries outside of the US, the 1.9 L 4-cylinder engine was replaced by a more straight 6 , 2.0 L by 1999.

German tuning companies have fited V8 engines in to the Z3. AC Svhnitzer (4.4L in roadster version, no series production) [1] and Hartge (5.0L in Coupé version, titled Hartge Z3 MQP V8) [2]

The Z3 had a face lift in 2000 in Dakar Yellowall. The car had a more efficient engine and was in 3 different straight-6 engines types (the 2.2 L M54B22 (available outside North America), 2.5 L M54B25, 3.0 L M54B30, and (for the M Roadster) 3.2 L S54B32). The three engine types were seen in all Z3 cars right upto the time the car was taken out in 2002. The interior of the Z3 was given a face lift but the plastic window stilled remained.

The Motorsports division of BMW produced the M Roadster series which had upgrades to its suspension and engine types of the M3 during 1998 to 2002. The international 1998, 1999 and 2000 M roadster had the 3.2L S50 motor from the E36 M3 with quad exhausts. The North American models for this time frame had the less powerful S52 engine. The 2001 and 2002 models all had the S54 motor from the E46 M3.

BMW upgraded the interior of the Z3 with extra gauges in the center console, "m" shift knobs lighted, fitted with chrome fittings in the cockpit and sports car seats were standard equipment.

The BMW Z3 saw changes to the exterior in the form of larger wheels, placed further apart from each other and large aggressive fenders to that of the standard Z3 model.

Z3 BMW Convertible Top, Top For BMW Z3 Coupe

The BMW Z3 Convertivle hardtop also offered as an option in model.

The BMW Z3 M was replaced by the Z4 M.

BMW during that time released a coupe in addition to the roadster version. This featured a chassis-stiffening rear hatch area. A Z 3 coupe was made available between 1999 to 2002 and had the largest of the 6-cylinder engines on offer in a Z3 roadster.

Now the BMW Z3 convertible hardtop Roaster are great beast, they not only have a good look but perform well on the road. In the cabin of the convertible they tend to keep outside noise out well and the cabin is warm during winter. The BMW Z 3 hardtop seem to be popular as they give more rigidity to the car.

Buying a used Z3 BMW Roaster hardtop is a choice as its far cheaper and you could save alot of money
